by Hello! Its so great to see you here! I’m Kirsty and I am the secretary of Southside Archery, I love to keep busy and amongst all the things I enjoy doing I love blogging and designing/updating websites. So when we decided to have a website for the club, I was the first volunteer to set it up.
We are a relatively new club, we only started shooting in May but we have been years in the making. Our coach (and my other half) Leigh go into archery around four years ago. When he first tried to get involved he realised how hard it was to find somewhere to learn and then go on to shoot – mostly because of the costs involved. Leigh was fortunate enough to get offered a place on a course ran by Glasgow Park Life who were running sessions in a local park. From there he was asked by one of the organisers if he would like to volunteer, Glasgow Life were keen to start up an archery program in the southside and they needed someone to run it. Leigh went on his instructors course, then later his level 1 coaching qualification and started sessions alongside another coach as part of the wellbeing program at the Govanhill Baths.
When the news came that the Baths was going to be closing for refurbishment, a plan was needed if Southside Archery was to continue. We already had a group of likeminded people willing to help us and we officially formed our own club, independent of the Govanhill Baths. The committee worked hard and faced numerous obstacles, mostly around finding a venue but everyone pulled together and we finally started shooting in May. We are grateful to have received funding from Glasgow Life though Culture and Sport Glasgow and continue to have a close relationship with them.
This website is obviously in its infancy, but I do plan on having profiles on all our committee members so you can get to know us all and find out how we came together to form our club. I may also invite our committee to write guest posts on this blog, or perhaps interview them and some of our club members.
We recently started our first beginners course and our first group are just about to graduate! These are really exciting times for Southside Archery and I think I can speak for all of the committee when I say we would love for you to get involved!
